Phthalic anhydride is the anhydride of phthalic acid. This colorless solid is
an important industrial chemical, especially for the large–scale production of
plasticizers for plastics. It is presently obtained by catalytic oxidation of
ortho–xylene or naphthalene. Phthalic anhydride can also be prepared from
phthalic acid.
It is a white, crystalline, slightly water-soluble solid, C8H4O3, used
chiefly in the manufacture of dyes, alkyd resins, and plasticizers.

phthalate (CAP), a common enteric coating excipient that has also been shown to
have antiviral activity.Phthalic
