Traditionally Iodine has been acknowledged as powerful bactericide and it is useful for fungi, protozoans, viruses, and yeasts. The iodine has the problem of irritation on the skin and toxicity in some sensitive persons. The iodine also results in formation of stains around the area where it is applied.

In case one has bigger burn or deeper wounds, then he or she should not use it without taking the advice of a doctor.

Povidone iodine should not be used regularly in thyroiddisease, or in patients receiving lithium treatment.
