Zinc chloride is a widely used reagent in various industrial processes. These
include textile finishing, the etching of metals, the manufacture of parchment
paper, and the preparation of galvanizing, soldering, and tinning fluxes. Zinc
chloride is also used in organic chemical synthesis, such as in the formation of
amines from azides.
Zinc chloride(CAS.NO:7646-85-7)
has a variety of uses including water treatment as an electrolyte in battery
manufacture, in zinc plating, rubber and fiber vulcanization, textile finishing
and for applications in food canning. It has a number of uses in personal care
products and as an intermediate for fertilizers, antibiotics and
catalysts.
1.Production and preparation
1). Prepare by the action of hydrogen chloride gas on hot zinc. Several
hydrated form is known to exist, which can be prepared by various reactions such
as zinc oxide with aqueous hydrochloric acid.
Production methods: a quantity of hydrochloric acid containing a certain
amount of added oxidation reactor hydrochloric left the reaction of zinc
chloride solution . When the solution is 3.5 to 4 , the precipitate on standing

2).Non-aqueous
zinc chloride can be obtained by heating zinc in a chlorine gas stream or
hydrochloric acid. This is usually done commercially by means of a reaction
between hydrochloric acid and zinc scrap or roasted zinc or, i.e. raw zinc
oxide. The solution is purified in various ways, depending on which impurities
are present in the initial material. Iron and manganese can be precipitated as
oxides through the addition of zinc oxide or sodium hypochlorite. Heavy metals
are removed with the aid of zinc powder. The solution is concentrated by boiling
and hydrochloric acid is added to prevent the formation of basic
chlorides.
Zinc chloride is usually sold as an approximately 50%
solution but is also produced in solid form by further evaporation to an almost
non-aqueous salt. The non-aqueous zinc chloride is very hygroscopic and is
therefore used as a drying agent in organic syntheses.
2.Application
1). for organic synthesis dehydrating agent , condensing agent ,
polyacrylonitrile solvent , mordant dyeing , mercerizing agent, sizing agents,
used in the synthesis activity and cationic dyes
2). used as a dehydrating agent, catalyst , mordant , sizing agents,
weighting agents, preservatives, also used in electroplating , dyes ,
pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other industrial
3). for organic synthesis industry, dehydrating agent , condensing agent
producing vanillin, Lagotis aldehydes , anti-inflammatory pain medications ,
cation exchange resin catalyst . Polyacrylonitrile solvent can be used .
Industry as a mordant dyeing , mercerizing agent, sizing agent . The textile
industry for the production of sliver barrels , pike and other raw materials (
cotton fiber cosolvent ) , can improve fiber bonding force . Azoic dye industry
as chromogenic dye salt stabilizer for the production of reactive dyes and
cationic dyes . Oil purification agent and activated carbon as an activator .
For the impregnation of wood having corrosion resistance and flame retardancy.
Cardboard and cloth products used as flame retardants . Used in electroplating .
Welding electrodes used drugs. Metallurgical industry for the production of
aluminum , light metal deacidification, treating the metal surface oxide layer .
Used for the production of blueprint paper . As battery electrolytes. For the
production of resistant foam raw materials and production of zinc cyanide . Also
used in medicine and drug production .
4). Used as analytical reagents, oil purifying agent and dehydrating agent in
organic synthesis.
